How to Read & Write Avysh

Avysh alphabet

Here is some useless information for you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Here are the two charts, one in Avysh, one in English. As you can see, not all the English letters are present in Avysh, while at the same time Avysh has some individual letters for combinations in English. The basic concept there works both ways. Avysh lacks a "Q" and an "X" - they make up for this lack by writing "kw" and "ks" respectively when the need arises.

In Avysh, the combination of the 'n' and the 'd' symbols makes "and" which we also use one symbol for in English, which is the ampersand. Though less common, the Avysh writer can also use the "th" letter to write the word "the" without confusing a reader. The top line, the vowels, all are shown with a dot - the dot denotes a long vowel. If the dot is not present, assume the vowel is short.

In addition to these letter differences, Avysh is written in boustrophedon, which means that the first line of text is written left to right, then the second line is written from right to left, and continuing alternating back and forth. For example, the beginning of the poem "The Raven" would look something like this in Avysh:

Once upon a midnight dreary,
yraew dna kaew derednop I sA
Over many a quaint and curious
erol nettogrof fo emuloV
As I nodded, nearly napping,
gnippat a emac ereht ylnedduS
As of someone gently rapping,
.rood rebmahc ym ta gnippaR

Now this might look impossible to an English reader, but when one is raised with such a style, it comes naturally and seems like the only sensible and logical way to write and read. The average reader of Avysh would be equally flummoxed by our style of writing.

To The Shore

So, this is the main point of this page. Yeah, it looks like just another vanity page, with zero interesting content, but I promise you, my writing rawks. I started writing this extremely long and increasingly complex story (very much against my will, I feel the need to point out) when I was fourteen years old. At fifty-four, I have finally published the first book in the series to Amazon!

You, lucky dawg, have found this page. Good for you! I'm glad you're here (I think I am, anyway... you know, if I sent you here. On the other hand, if you're a spammer or some other kind of monster, git lost! Nobody wants you ANYwhere!). So welcome to the page where you can find ... well... me!

*Dances in circles* Are you not amused? Delighted? *Dances more vigorously* *falls down in a dizzy heap* Now see what you made me do?

About

What can I say about "me" that hasn't already been said? Blah, blah, blah, I'm a person, blah, blah, whatever.... you know you love me! It is self-evident how awesome I am! And modest, too!

Today is a Tuesday, and Josie is sitting in a big recliner with a laptop and a cat, trying to be informative without being boring. She is, in no particular order, autistic, a player of the guitar and harp, tattooed, an enthusiastic fiber artist (mostly crochet and weaving, but also tatting, bobbin lace, embroidery... etc.), an accomplished seamstress out of necessity (they don't make clothes she likes in *her* size!), an animal lover, a homeowner, a collector of Rocks She Thinks Are Cool, asthmatic, a voracious reader, eclectic, eccentric, into BDSM, a tripper of the light fantastic, raised by a Proud Hippie and it Shows, Bi, she/her, Theistic but good luck guessing which One(s), a survivor of sexual assault who also works with other survivors of sexual assault, a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror TV shows, movies, and radio, mommy to three cats and two tarantulas, a mediocre cook, a lover of most styles of music except for Country and Whatever-That-Modern-Stuff-Is, a recovering Hoarder, an excellent swimmer, a fan of the Boston Red Sox, a lifelong non-smoker but not evangelical about it, and a resident of Butte, Montana.

If you are someone like Shauna (I remember you and your oh-so-very-intense fellow from Starbucks) and want to get ahold of me, you can email me at josiecinders@gmail.com and include "To The Shore" in the title to catch my attention. I'm doing this all on my own and juggling a chaotic, intense life just like everybody else, so I'll get back to you... at some point. Your communication IS important to me, but don't wear yourself out waiting for me to reply immediately! I'm rumoured to be riddled with flaws.
